Overview, Setup Process and Rules of SSL

To deliver the world's highest level of trust to your organization, Network31 offers you Secure Socket Layer, otherwise known as SSL, SSL acts as an encryption tool for your information. This protects confidential information - such as credit card numbers, online forms, and financial data - from interception and hacking. As one of our clients, you are able to use this feature on any of our Hosting Plans (extra charge for Basic, Deluxe and Pro plans) Upon your request, Network31 will set up this option. But, first we need for you to complete the following:

1. Create a folder called "Secure"
2. Upload the "Secure" folder via FTP or Frontpage to your root directory
3. Upload all files you need secure into that directory
4. Contact Technical Support through the Support Form letting them know the above is complete.

Technical Support will then finish the setup and contact you upon receipt of your SSL Support Form. Once you have received confirmation of the setup, remember a few rules that must be followed when using SSL:

1. The encryption of your information, such as an order form with credit card numbers, takes place between the web site and the mail recipient of the form results. Once the information reaches the destination e-mail address, the information is then in an unencrypted format and awaiting your retrieval.

2. The recipient mail address of the form's information should be located @yourdomain.xxx. We strongly discourage forwarding sensitive information to an e-mail outside your POP3 account. If that is done, the information passed will be in an unencrypted format.

3. Hyperlinks to any files located inside the "secure" directory must use the https:// protocol. For example, if you had an order form you were creating a link for, then it would look something like this:https://www.yourdomain.xxx/secure/orderform.html

4. Both Microsoft and Netscape browsers support the option of viewing the SSL Certificate owner. Visitors to your site who have this feature enabled in their browser will notice that the owner is Network31 and not the web site it resides on. This is a normal function and visitors should not be alarmed. This method of encryption (security) is just as good as if you owned your own SSL Certificate.

5. All Network31 clients have the option of purchasing their own SSL certificate. There are 2 companies where you may obtain these certificates, Verisign and Thawte.
